technology is bringing cutting edge services to remote populations, and
the UIC College of Pharmacy is at the center of the telemedicine
Dr. Juliana Chan and her colleague, Dr. Melissa Badowski, currently
serve all 26 Illinois correctional facilities, providing care to over
600 Hepatitis C patients each year. While a prison physician directs the
diagnostic decision-making, Dr. Chan takes the lead on education and
medication plans, providing medication counseling, managing side effects
and simplifying inmates’ regimens. UIC’s innovative work has emerged as
a prominent example of telemedicine’s potential to drastically reform
Chan also exposes UIC students to the novel world of telemedicine.
Pharmacy students can participate in a telemedicine rotation or take an
elective course in telemedicine designed to educate students on the
intricacies of the still-blossoming service.
Unique learning experiences with world-class leaders is how we’ve been
taking students from classroom to career since 1859.
