Gremlin Details State of Chaos Engineering

Gremlin updated their entire library of attacks and experiments, making them freely available to all users. Beyond server shutdowns and CPU spikes, which were already available attacks within Gremlin Free, users can now test for memory leaks, disks filling up, latency injections, process killers, blocked DNS access, and more. Today also marks the fifth year anniversary of the company’s founding, over which time the interest and demand for Chaos Engineering has grown significantly, represented in the first ever State of Chaos Engineering report.

In order to help hasten this effort, we are now expanding our Free edition to include all attack types.”

The data sources for the first-ever State of Chaos Engineering report include a comprehensive survey with 500+ responses, combined with Gremlin’s platform data. Respondents came from various sizes of companies, but predominantly enterprise organizations. Industries varied as well, with a high representation from Software & Services.

Key findings from the State of Chaos Engineering report

Teams who frequently run Chaos Engineering experiments have 99.99% availability or higher (less than an hour of downtime in a year)

The total number of Chaos Engineering experiments run in 2020 has doubled YoY when compared to 2019 on the Gremlin platform

While still an emerging practice, the majority of respondents to the survey (60%) have run at least one Chaos Engineering attack

Fear of testing in production remains, with 34% of respondents running Chaos Engineering experiments in production

A notable 68% of Gremlin users have run Kubernetes-specific attacks

Nearly a quarter of respondents to the State of Chaos Engineering survey were from banks and insurance companies. Chaitanya Krant, Engineering Manager at the National Australia Bank (NAB), writes that “Gremlin makes Chaos Engineering easy and seamless. It’s cut down the amount of time involved in designing and executing our chaos experiments, particularly for our Microservices and Kubernetes.”
